Diversity and Inclusion

An inclusive and inspirational culture fosters high performance: mixed teams make the best business decisions.

At BLP we aim to create an environment where all our employees are valued, motivated and able to be themselves, whatever their differences might be.

We value the power of teamwork and cooperation, and place great emphasis on the benefits this provides to individuals and the firm

Five priority areas

Our Inclusivity strategy was launched in 2015 and has five areas of focus; Culture, Family, Gender Representation, Lesbian Gay Bisexual and  Transgender* and Social Inclusion and Ethnicity. It’s important to BLP that whatever we do, we do it well and so the list was selectively chosen. Each of the five areas have a task-group of volunteers who meet regularly to discuss relevant issues and drive things forward with a variety of events and initiatives.

Culture

Our culture fundamentally underpins all of the other areas of our Inclusivity strategy. We need an environment where employees feel comfortable and able to be themselves, in order to make progress. All employees will be accountable for fostering a diverse and inclusive culture, with partners and line managers leading by example.

Family

At BLP we recognise that family-life and working-life are not mutually exclusive. We have working practices that are supportive of individuals life and family responsibilities, whatever those may look like.

Gender Representation

We are committed to increasing the number of women in senior management roles, pitch and project teams and firm-wide committees. Our target is to achieve 30% female representation in the UK partnership by the end of 2018, and more female partners globally.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT*)

We have had an active LGBT* group in place since 2007 and use various internal and external events and initiatives to raise awareness and educate all staff about our LGBT* community.

DiversCity

DiversCity is the brainchild of BLP and Herbert Smith Freehills and since its creation in 2011 over 10 other law firms now take part.  DiversCity is a unique recruitment event aimed at raising awareness of pursuing a legal career in the City amongst LGBT* students and graduates. For more information visit www.diverscityinlaw.net.

Social Inclusion and Ethnicity

Having a diverse workforce, with a mix of people at all levels, in all departments, is incredibly important. This is why we are trying hard to encourage upward social mobility and ethnic diversity both within and outside of the legal profession.

Career Kick-Start Work Experience Programme

The BLP Career Kick-Start Work Experience programme was inspired by the PRIME initiative and is also a part of the Legal Social Mobility Partnership (LSMP).

PRIME was launched in 2011 by the legal sector to provide fair access to quality work experience in law firms for young people. LSMP was subsequently created to provide a further week of work experience in corporate legal teams. Both of these initiatives aim to level the playing field, in recognition that students from more privileged backgrounds, particularly those who have been privately educated, may have access to more work experience and networking opportunities than others. The programme provides a holistic view of the legal sector and different opportunities to practice as a solicitor.

The BLP Career Kick-Start Work Experience programme is designed to provide Year 12 students with a detailed insight into what it’s like to work in a City law firm and in in-house legal roles. The programme comprises two weeks as follows:

Week One (23 - 27 July 2018) - A week at BLP’s offices, gaining a real insight into what lawyers do on a daily basis via work shadowing as well as information on the different routes in to the profession and a number of skills sessions to help prepare you for the world of work.

Week Two (30 July – 3 August 2018) – A week visiting a different organisation each day in a variety of sectors – including sports, financial services and media. During this week you will learn how law firms interact with their clients and the different roles for lawyers in these organisations. There will be plenty of opportunities to build your network speak to people from all of the different organisations involved.

Vacation schemes

An insight into our firm

There is no better way to experience BLP than to join us on one of our vacation schemes.

We run three schemes each year in London and typically take 20 students per scheme. In our Hong Kong office we run three month-long internship long schemes each year and typically take 5-8 students per scheme

You will get to choose the departments you sit in and will be assigned a trainee 'buddy' who you will shadow.

You will very much be considered 'part of the team' and will be involved in every aspect of the department from client meetings to court runs and work with senior lawyers.

This not only helps you get a feel for the firm, but also helps develop your understanding of legal issues.

Apart from actually doing real client work, you will also attend a series of partner-led talks and workshops, to help build up your knowledge about BLP and also improve your skill set.

But it won't all be work! You will have lots of opportunities to network with firm members in social settings. We arrange a lunch with partners, various social events with trainees and, if there are any firmwide events, you will be invited to attend. On previous schemes, Vac schemers have attended the firm Christmas party, a BLP client 'dragon boat race' and have been invited to play in the BLP sports teams such as tag rugby and softball.

We want you to get the most out of your vacation scheme, so we expect you to ask lots of questions and get involved.

Given the level of investment made in people joining a vacation scheme, the recruitment process for our schemes is the same as our recruitment process for training contracts. You must first complete the online application form and aptitude test, and then if you are successful we will invite you to an assessment centre. During the scheme, you will be offered the chance to have a final round training contract interview.

The dates for our schemes in 2017/2018 are:

  • Winter 2017: 4-8 December (London) and 4 weeks in December/January (Hong Kong)
  • Summer 2018: 11-22 June and 2-13 July (London)
  • 4 week schemes in June and July (Hong Kong)

For further details please check our Application deadlines page, or view our Apply now page to submit your application. We will be accepting applications from 7th September 2017.

Work experience opportunities

If you're still weighing-up whether a career in law is right for you, we offer a range of events and schemes so you can learn more about the great things you can achieve here. There are opportunities for year 12 school students, first-year university law students, penultimate year univerisity non-law students and those either at a more advanced stage of their studies or, in fact, who are considering a change of direction from an existing career.

Year 12 School student (London)

Our two week Career Kick-Start work experience programme will provide you with a detailed insight into what it’s like to work as a lawyer in a City law firm and in companies. We will provide you with practical skills which future employers will value. Furthermore, we will give you information on what you need to do to prepare yourself for, and carry out, your job search.

For more information on the programme and how to apply please visit our School Programme and Apprenticeships page.

First year law student or Penultimate year non-law student (London)

Designed specifically for University students earlier on in their studies, we offer an Insight scheme.

During the Insight scheme, students will be assigned a trainee buddy for the duration of the week. You will shadow the trainee in a department and be given typical 'trainee tasks' so you can see what a trainee would do day-to-day. We also organise a series of talks and workshops, to give you more information on what life is like in a major law firm and to also help build your skill set. The scheme is held in April 2018.

We will be accepting applications for the Insight scheme from 7 September. Please click here to apply.

Penultimate year law student, Final year non-law student or Graduate (London and Hong Kong)

Our Vacation schemes are an ideal opportunity to gain some first-hand experience of life at BLP, getting to know us better, obtaining a feel for the work that we do and our culture.

You will get a choice of the department you sit in and during the scheme you will work alongside BLP trainees and senior lawyers on real deals and cases. You will also be offered a final round Training Contract interview during the scheme.

If you want to read more about what you will do on a Vacation scheme and find our when they are held, please go to our Vacation schemes page.

Ahead of applying for a Vacation scheme or Training Contract, if you just want to assess whether life as a City lawyer is for you, we run a number of open days and evenings each year. These events are an excellent way to find out more about BLP and also will provide you with some important skill building sessions. These events enable you to see directly what BLP can offer you and at the same time you will gain a feel for the firm and our culture, directly from our people.

We will be running open evening events in November 2017 within our London office. Please click here to apply.
