Five priority areas

Our Inclusivity strategy was launched in 2015 and has five areas of focus; Culture, Family, Gender Representation, Lesbian Gay Bisexual and  Transgender* and Social Inclusion and Ethnicity. It’s important to BLP that whatever we do, we do it well and so the list was selectively chosen. Each of the five areas have a task-group of volunteers who meet regularly to discuss relevant issues and drive things forward with a variety of events and initiatives.

Culture

Our culture fundamentally underpins all of the other areas of our Inclusivity strategy. We need an environment where employees feel comfortable and able to be themselves, in order to make progress. All employees will be accountable for fostering a diverse and inclusive culture, with partners and line managers leading by example.

Family

At BLP we recognise that family-life and working-life are not mutually exclusive. We have working practices that are supportive of individuals life and family responsibilities, whatever those may look like.

Gender Representation

We are committed to increasing the number of women in senior management roles, pitch and project teams and firm-wide committees. Our target is to achieve 30% female representation in the UK partnership by the end of 2018, and more female partners globally.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT*)

We have had an active LGBT* group in place since 2007 and use various internal and external events and initiatives to raise awareness and educate all staff about our LGBT* community.

DiversCity

DiversCity is the brainchild of BLP and Herbert Smith Freehills and since its creation in 2011 over 10 other law firms now take part.  DiversCity is a unique recruitment event aimed at raising awareness of pursuing a legal career in the City amongst LGBT* students and graduates. Social Inclusion and Ethnicity

Having a diverse workforce, with a mix of people at all levels, in all departments, is incredibly important. This is why we are trying hard to encourage upward social mobility and ethnic diversity both within and outside of the legal profession.

Career Kick-Start Work Experience Programme

The BLP Career Kick-Start Work Experience programme was inspired by the PRIME initiative and is also a part of the Legal Social Mobility Partnership (LSMP). 

PRIME was launched in 2011 by the legal sector to provide fair access to quality work experience in law firms for young people. LSMP was subsequently created to provide a further week of work experience in corporate legal teams. Both of these initiatives aim to level the playing field, in recognition that students from more privileged backgrounds, particularly those who have been privately educated, may have access to more work experience and networking opportunities than others. The programme provides a holistic view of the legal sector and different opportunities to practice as a solicitor.

The BLP Career Kick-Start Work Experience programme is designed to provide Year 12 students with a detailed insight into what it’s like to work in a City law firm and in in-house legal roles. The programme comprises two weeks as follows:

Week One (23 - 27 July 2018) - A week at BLP’s offices, gaining a real insight into what lawyers do on a daily basis via work shadowing as well as information on the different routes in to the profession and a number of skills sessions to help prepare you for the world of work.

Week Two (30 July – 3 August 2018) – A week visiting a different organisation each day in a variety of sectors – including sports, financial services and media. During this week you will learn how law firms interact with their clients and the different roles for lawyers in these organisations. There will be plenty of opportunities to build your network speak to people from all of the different organisations involved.
