Opportunities at BLP

Here at BLP we work hard at making sure that you are armed with the information and experience you need to succeed in your legal career. Below is a list of opportunities, from Year 12 students through to legal apprenticeships, that can get you started on the right track.

INSIGHT PROGRAMMES

Before embarking down the path of legal training, you might want more of an insight into what a legal career and an international law firm would look like. We have 3 Insight Programmes to do just that:

CAREER KICK START

The BLP Career Kick-Start Work Experience programme was inspired by the PRIME initiative and is also a part of the Legal Social Mobility Partnership (LSMP). 

PRIME was launched in 2011 by the legal sector to provide fair access to quality work experience in law firms for young people. LSMP was subsequently created to provide a further week of work experience in corporate legal teams. Both of these initiatives aim to level the playing field, in recognition that students from more privileged backgrounds, particularly those who have been privately educated, may have access to more work experience and networking opportunities than others. The programme provides a holistic view of the legal sector and different opportunities to practice as a solicitor.

The BLP Career Kick-Start Work Experience programme is designed to provide Year 12 students with a detailed insight into what it’s like to work in a City law firm and in in-house legal roles. The programme comprises two weeks as follows:

  • Week One (23 - 27 July 2018) - A week at BLP’s offices, gaining a real insight into what lawyers do on a daily basis via work shadowing as well as information on the different routes in to the profession and a number of skills sessions to help prepare you for the world of work.
  • Week Two (30 July – 3 August 2018) – A week visiting a different organisation each day in a variety of sectors – including sports, financial services and media. During this week you will learn how law firms interact with their clients and the different roles for lawyers in these organisations. There will be plenty of opportunities to build your network speak to people from all of the different organisations involved.

LONDON INSIGHT SCHEME

First year law student or Penultimate year non-law student (London)

Designed specifically for University students earlier on in their studies, we offer an Insight scheme.

During the Insight scheme, students will be assigned a trainee buddy for the duration of the week. You will shadow the trainee in a department and be given typical 'trainee tasks' so you can see what a trainee would do day-to-day. We also organise a series of talks and workshops, to give you more information on what life is like in a major law firm and to also help build your skill set. The scheme is held in April 2018.

Vacation schemes

There is no better way to experience BLP than to join us on one of our vacation schemes. We run three a year in London and typically take 20 students per scheme. In our Hong Kong office we run three month-long internships each year and typically take 5-8 students per scheme

You will get to choose the departments you sit in and will be assigned a trainee 'buddy' for you to shadow. You will very much be 'part of the team' and will be involved in every aspect of the department; from client meetings to court runs. Apart from actually doing real client work, you will also attend a series of partner-led talks and workshops, to help build up your knowledge about BLP and improve your skill set.

But it won't all be work! You will have lots of opportunities to network with firm members in social settings: lunch with partners, various social events with trainees, and firmwide events. Previously Vac schemers have attended the Christmas party, a BLP client 'dragon boat race' and playing in BLP sports teams such as tag rugby and softball.  

We want you to get the most out of your vacation scheme, so we expect you to ask lots of questions and get involved.

The recruitment process for our schemes is the same as our recruitment process for training contracts. First is the online application form and aptitude test, and then if you are successful, we'll invite you to an assessment centre. During the scheme, you will be offered the chance to have a final round training contract interview.

Our 2017/2018 scheme dates are:

  • Winter 2017: 4-8 December (London) and 4 weeks in December/January (Hong Kong)
  • Summer 2018: 11-22 June and 2-13 July (London)
  • 4 week schemes in June and July (Hong Kong)
