A reminder that grace period deadlines have now been published in relation to the newest generic top level domain (TLD) know as .tel.
The .tel domain is different from other TLD's in that it is aimed at individuals and businesses wishing to make their contact details readily available to internet users. The idea is that .tel will allow users to communicate directly with the individual or business behind a particular website, using technologies such as voice over IP, email or SMS.
When a user types in the name of a company and adds .tel into any live internet connected device, assuming that the company has registered the .tel domain, instead of receiving an IP address that would eventually link through to the website of that company, the user will immediately receive that company's contact data and is able to directly reach the company with just one click (via the device being used - email, SMS or phone).
Applications from individuals or businesses wishing to register the .tel domain are due to be considered on a world-wide basis by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). As with the launch of other TLD's, a Sunrise grace period for owners of registered trade marks will operate from 3 December 2008 to 2 February 2009. Applications will be awarded on a first come first served basis to any qualifying applicant, so early application is recommended. Sunrise registrations will carry a three-year term.
There will then be a Landrush period, when registration will be open to all who are willing to pay a premium price, from 3 February to 23 March 2009. Landrush registrations will carry a three-year minimum term. The General Availability period will then open on 24 March 2009 and registrations in this period will carry a one-year minimum term.
