Lawyers On Demand launches new LOD On Call model

London, 19 June 2013: Lawyers On Demand (LOD), the innovative alternative legal services provider launched by Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP),  today announces the launch of LOD On Call, its new pay-as-you-go model to help legal teams manage their changing workloads more flexibly and cost efficiently. This additional model follows the success of LOD’s original secondment-style service, On Site.

With LOD On Call, carefully selected individual LOD  lawyers, or teams of lawyers, work remotely as needed for in-house and law firm clients.  It is a flexible model with no need to house a lawyer on site.  Clients gain direct access to high quality expertise without the law firm overhead and at much reduced cost, paying only for the time they use.

LOD On Call answers a variety of client needs, from resourcing short-term projects to managing ongoing overflow work.  Around 20 trial assignments using this model have taken place prior to launch with 17 different clients.  From today, the LOD On Call service is being made fully available  to in-house teams and law firms.

LOD On Call allows clients to build relationships with a particular LOD lawyer or a team of LOD lawyers.  Roy Uriely, Group Head of Legal, Premier Foods PLC says, “LOD has produced an excellent result for us.  Working remotely with an experienced LOD lawyer gives us the flexibility we need to deal with changing workloads, as we are able to access her industry expertise just when we need it.  Our LOD lawyer has become a valued and trusted member of our in-house team.  By in-sourcing our work in this way, we have been able to achieve a cost effective solution without sacrificing the benefits of a personal relationship.”

Examples of assignments carried out during the trial have included:

  • An LOD team (including an ex-City law firm partner) working as needed with a major healthcare products provider and its legal teams across Europe, from full-time one week to just a few hours the next
  • A team of five real estate LOD lawyers working with a leading law firm on a deal for six weeks
  • An experienced commercial LOD lawyer acting as in-house counsel to a large manufacturer on an ongoing, as needed basis

On Call complements LOD’s existing and successful secondment style model – On Site – where its lawyers work with in-house and law firm clients, usually at their offices, for designated days each week.  With both models, LOD lawyers have the full backing of a major law firm, BLP, giving them access to know-how, precedents and research which enables them to deliver a high quality, cost effective service to LOD’s clients.

LOD On Call lawyers go through a rigorous interview and testing process like all LOD lawyers, but are not restricted to living close to the client.  Using this model, LOD is able to match clients with talented lawyers who have specialist industry expertise, but who might otherwise be too distant geographically or wish to incorporate their legal work with other pursuits as part of a portfolio career.

LOD Co-Founder Simon Harper said: “Over the last 6 years since LOD was founded, freelance lawyers have become part of the legal vernacular.  With 120 lawyers in our team and 300 assignments to our name today, the time is right for our next innovation.  LOD On Call reflects how our clients and lawyers have told us that they want to work, offering even greater flexibility and a genuine alternative to the traditional options.  We have been extremely encouraged by the feedback on our trial service and are looking forward to growing LOD On Call.”
