Goltsblat BLP celebrates its anniversary

International law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) has marked the first anniversary of its Russian office, Goltsblat BLP, which is the first Russian international law firm. The new office is celebrating after securing a number of global clients and completing several significant transactions, and BLP is now looking to further increase staff numbers in Moscow during 2010.

Goltsblat BLP’s clients include dozens of Fortune 500 companies, such as Coca-Cola, Johnson & Johnson, Kimberly-Clark, Nike and P&G. Some of the Goltsblat BLP team’s recent projects include advising Mars, Inc. on the US$23bn acquisition of Wrigley and supporting its post-acquisition integration / restructuring and Magna International on the planned acquisition of the Russian and CIS part of Opel and related businesses from General Motors Corporation. Goltsblat BLP lawyers have also supported VimpelCom, Motorola, Toyota Bank, Alfa Bank, Philips, Nissan, SGS, Volkswagen, Sanofi Aventis, and others.

BLP’s Moscow office is headed up by one of Russia’s leading lawyers Andrey Goltsblat. He is supported by eleven partners, including Maxim Kulkov (Dispute Resolution, Commercial, Competition & Antitrust), Vitaly Mozharowski (Real Estate and Construction), Anton Sitnikov (Corporate / M&A) and  former London based corporate finance partner Ian Ivory who provides English law capabilities to the already strong Russian team. In addition, the office also has a number of English law secondees from London who spend up to six months working in the office and the team works closely with UK-based colleagues who provide English law support to Russian clients and international companies investing in Russia.

By merging the leading Russian and English law capabilities, the office created a completely new capability and provides a genuinely integrated service to Russian and international clients investing in the Russian market, as well as to Russian clients investing globally.

Andrey said: “Having a combined Russian and English legal team is undoubtedly new and clients have responded extremely positively to the improved service we can offer. Our success in 2009 is a result of the innovative idea we developed for the market but none of this would be possible without the team of professionals here who have shown great enthusiasm and team work, and the support of our colleagues in London.”

“Our key achievement has been client loyalty. Virtually all of the clients we previously worked with have continued working with us, which is a credit to the team. I am excited about the future as we continue to build the range of capabilities in the Moscow office so that we can better serve our growing client base.”

BLP’s managing partner Neville Eisenberg added: “Goltsblat BLP has had an excellent first year. Despite the difficult economic environment, the team, led by Andrey, has demonstrated a huge commitment to the concept of providing our clients with this new combination of Russian and English legal expertise. The client endorsements help demonstrate that our strategy to grow the firm’s exposure in key emerging markets like Russia and the Middle East is producing results.”
