Financial Services expert Daren Allen to join BLP’s Banking and Finance Litigation team
International law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) has appointed Financial Services litigation expert Daren Allen as a partner within its core London-based Banking and Finance Litigation team.
Daren was head of Financial Services at DLA Piper, and is best known for advising financial institutions and large corporations on complex regulatory and financial crime investigations, litigation and enforcement proceedings. He has worked on some of the leading money laundering cases, conducted Skilled Persons reports and is widely recognised for his expertise in fraud, bribery and corruption cases.
The appointment is the latest in a number of strategic hires at BLP, which reflects a positive trend of clients turning to BLP for high-value complex issues. These include real estate disputes expert Michael Metliss and James Knox, one of the UK’s most highly regarded real estate lawyers. The firm also announced the recruitment of Alistair Duffield as BLP’s new Singapore managing partner. Other recent additions to the partnership include employment experts Marion Bloodworth and Lisa Mayhew, and structured finance practitioner Lucy Oddy.
The Commercial Dispute Resolution Group at BLP has increased the breadth of skills it offers financial services clients significantly in recent years from fraud and regulatory investigations through to complex derivatives disputes and mis-selling claims. Following the appointments of David Hughes and Segun Osuntokun from DLA Piper, Nathan Willmott from Freshfields and more recently Sidney Myers from Allen & Overy, the team is now one of the strongest in the City’s financial services legal market. The changing regulatory landscape and the pressures on financial organisations generally has meant that the team continues to grow in the UK and internationally.
Daren Allen said: “The new regulatory landscape will bring with it a whole set of new challenges for those in the financial sector. To meet these challenges, clients need both a breadth and quality of financial service expertise. Working with the team at BLP offers a real opportunity to grow the banking litigation and investigations business and help clients address the pressing issues around financial crime. I am looking forward to the prospect of being part of a multidisciplinary team across departments and international offices.”
Commenting on the hire Nathan Willmott, head of the Commercial Dispute Resolution Group said: “Daren is going to add significant depth and expertise to our already strong financial services expertise. Corporate and financial crime is high on the agenda of our financial institution clients and Daren is a market-leading authority in this area. We are delighted to have attracted such a highly regarded individual and feel that he will fit into the team very well.”
