BLP’s Simon Allan moves to Moscow to further develop the international capabilities of Goltsblat BLP and to boost its Banking and Finance practice

Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) today announced that Simon Allan is relocating to Moscow to boost the Banking and Finance practice at BLP’s growing Moscow office, Goltsblat BLP and to further develop the international capabilities of Goltsblat BLP.

Further enhancement of the Moscow Banking and Finance team is in a response to the increased client demand for English-law related services, which has lead to the firm steadily expanding in a challenging market environment.

Until recently, Simon headed up BLP’s Finance practice and was responsible for its strategic development and growth during a period in which fee income increased from £8m to £37m. He is one of BLP’s most senior partners and has been on the BLP Board for the past ten years. Most recently he has been leading a project to develop the firm’s finance capability, client relationships and reputation internationally, particularly in emerging markets.

As a lawyer, over the last 20 or so years Simon has advised governments and leading private companies on highly complex transport, defence and urban regeneration projects. This included work on the UK’s second high speed rail project. He has also been involved in the UK’s Public Private Partnership (PPP) market since its inception, and has structured and led projects across education, healthcare, transport, housing and government accommodation, representing all sections of the market.

Simon joins at a particularly exciting time for Goltsblat BLP, which created Russia’s first international law firm in 2009 by bringing together a leading Russian legal team with a high quality international law firm for the first time. The office recently announced fee income was up by over 60% in the first half of the year compared with the same period last year, demonstrating that clients are increasingly recognising the unique benefits of the genuinely integrated service it offers. It is now one of the largest international law firms in Russia and was named International Office of the Year 2010 by Legal Business, the Russian Law Firm of the Year by Chambers Europe Awards for Excellence 2010 and the winner of International Law Office’s 2010 Client Choice Award for Russia.

Andrey Goltsblat, managing partner of Goltsblat BLP, said: “I am very pleased that Simon Allan is relocating to our office. This move is in line with our strategy in Russia to broaden the international capabilities we offer to the Russian market and to develop further the scope of these services. BLP’s banking and finance capabilities in London are now widely recognised and I am sure that the Moscow team will benefit greatly by such a high calibre lawyer as Simon joining us.”

Simon said: “Goltsblat BLP is a great success story. I am excited by the prospect of playing a role in taking things forward there. There is a great opportunity to provide Russian clients, and those investing in Russia, with high-quality Banking and Finance law advice. I already know Andrey and the team well, and know what an excellent service they provide. I am keen to help them deliver for clients and drive further growth in a very exciting market.”

Neville Eisenberg, BLP’s Managing Partner, said:“Developing the international side of our Russian business is a very important to the firm and I am delighted Simon has agreed to take on this new challenge. Simon’s contribution in building our Finance practice has been very valuable and he will now play an important role in the firm’s international development.”
