BLP wins appeal for London Hippodrome casino licence

Berwin Leighton Paisner LLP (“BLP”), on behalf of Hippodrome Casino Limited, has won an appeal in the Southwark Crown Court for a licence to run a casino at the Hippodrome theatre in Leicester Square. This new casino could be London’s last new casino for the foreseeable future because the new Gambling Act has strictly regulated the number of new casinos being built across the UK.

United Leisure Gaming is the 100% shareholder of Hippodrome Casino Limited and has been operating the Crystal Rooms arcade within the Hippodrome for over 20 years. In addition to a gaming floor of 20 tables, the redevelopment of the Hippodrome will incorporate a cabaret entertainment area, a world class restaurant and a sports bar. This combination of entertainment and gaming is a unique concept for the London gaming market.

Simon Thomas, Chairman of United Leisure Gaming said, “The redevelopment of the Hippodrome is key for our business over the coming years and we are delighted that the decision will enable us to create a multi-use facility. The BLP team has an excellent reputation for licensing work and we are grateful for their support in bringing about this monumental decision.”

The licensing team at BLP who won the case was led by partner, Craig Baylis. He was assisted by Graham Clack and Richard Knight.  Commenting on the win, Craig said: “This has been a momentous win and a landmark case for licensing. It is the first time that a multi-use facility has been granted a gaming licence in London and it gives the green light for what will be a great new attraction here.”
