BLP recruits Richard Hughes to Banking and Capital Markets Group

Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) has recruited Richard Hughes to join the Banking and Capital Markets Group within its Finance team as a partner.  He was previously at Sidley & Austin.

Richard has a wide range of experience in banking and general finance, securitisation and structured finance, property finance and asset finance.  His clients include lenders and borrowers, arrangers and issuers, and trustees.  Most recently he has been supporting them with restructuring issues.  He has particular experience within the banking, real estate, hotels, insurance and energy sectors, as well as in the Middle East and North Africa region, all of which are areas where BLP has particular strengths.

BLP’s Banking and Capital Markets Group has seen significant growth over the last year, partly as a result of its leading position in the restructuring of mortgage backed securities, a position that was recently enhanced by the recruitment of Jayne Black and Eleanor Hunwicks, who are leaders in the advising of servicers of commercial mortgage loans.  The firm has played an active role within many of the major transactions to restructure mortgage backed securities. Along with extensive contacts across the industry, Richard will bring additional expertise in this area and will supporting clients with other financial restructuring requirements.

Simon Allan, BLP’s head of Finance, said: “Richard is a gifted lawyer who is a natural fit with BLP, both in terms of his expertise and his relationships within the industry. As a firm, we remain committed to a finance capability that matches the strengths we have to offer in other areas, such as real estate, corporate, dispute resolution and, increasingly, tax.

“Richard joins us at a particularly interesting time. Although we are facing challenging markets in many areas, our banking and capital markets team has been particularly successful at capturing the strong flow of work that has resulted from the complexities of refinancing and reviewing mortgage backed securities around the world. These often use English law and our strong securitisation team is able to provide the expertise to manage the most difficult situations.”

Richard said: “I am delighted to be joining such a strong team. We share a number of contacts within the industry and I know I will be able to build a strong flow of work as part of the firm. Across BLP, the real estate team is the leader in the market and the firm has particularly highly regarded practices in hotels, insurance and energy, all of which are areas where I have existing, strong relationships. Its international approach is also attractive, since a large volume of my work is overseas or cross-border. The preferred firms on BLP’s panel offer the highest quality advice and the approach is flexible, while BLP’s own offices provide local knowledge in important, growing markets.”
