BLP EU lawyer pens Brexit the Musical – set to hit the Edinburgh Fringe in August 2017
An EU lawyer has written an all-singing, all-dancing account of the most divisive ask of the UK’s electorate in modern political history: to Leave or not to Leave, that is the question. Brexit – the Musical features 20 original songs written by Chris Bryant and will debut at this Summer’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival at the C Venues from 2-28 August 2017.
Chris is an Antitrust & Competition Partner at international law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) where he advises clients on issues surrounding Brexit. Having over 15 years of experience of advising on EU law issues in London and Brussels, Chris has been a key go-to advisor for clients on all things Brexit.
However, with a penchant for musical theatre, he took the opportunity to write a production laden with political satire and catchy songs, revealing another explanation for what has been going on behind the scenes in Westminster.
The dramatised version of events surrounding the June 2016 referendum sees the main character and hero Boris Johnson search to uncover the lost plan for Brexit in order save the nation from disaster. Boris is joined by a host of characters from across the political spectrum including Theresa May, Jeremy Corbyn and former Prime Minister David Cameron.
Chris Bryant, said: “I have been advising clients on the issues surrounding Brexit for the last two years and writing songs for most of my life. It seemed obvious to put the two things together to pen a musical about Brexit. With the characters involved and the events that have occurred since last June, there’s so much fun to be had!”
Lisa Mayhew, Managing Partner at BLP, said: “BLP is hugely supportive of Chris and we recognise the importance of allowing people to follow their passions beyond law. He is our Resident DJ at our Christmas parties, and I know that his creative talents coupled with his intimate knowledge of the complexities of EU law makes him well placed to write this musical, which we are all looking forward to seeing.”
