BLP appoints employment expert Lisa Mayhew in its Corporate practice

Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) has appointed Lisa Mayhew as a partner to its fast growing and leading employment team. She starts with BLP on 11 October 2010.

Lisa was previously head of employment litigation at Jones Day and has exceptional experience in complex employment litigation. Although she has clients across a range of sectors, she has particular expertise in financial services. This includes High Court cases that have involved team moves and restrictive covenants, bonuses, executive severance, equal pay and whistle blowing. For example, in the landmark case Villalba v Merrill Lynch, she led the team for Merrill Lynch and is credited with demonstrating that complex discrimination cases can be won by employers who prepare their evidence effectively. Prior to Jones Day, Lisa was a partner at Lovells.

The appointment is the next phase in BLP’s strategy to extend its high-end capabilities to clients.  The combination of Lisa, who is ranked amongst the UK’s top ten employment litigators, with BLP’s other leading employment litigation experts, including Fraser Younson and Rebecca Harding-Hill, makes the BLP team one of the strongest employment litigation teams in the country. The group, which has grown significantly in size and reputation under the leadership of team head Fraser Younson, has an increasing number of large, multinational corporate clients, particularly in the financial services sector. As a result, over the last 12 months it has been involved some of the highest profile cases across the City, for example the Tullets v BGC trial involving a large team move.

The employment team is also heavily involved in a number of ground-breaking BLP innovations. For example the recent, multi-million pound Managed Legal Service contract covers all of Colt’s employment law needs across EMEA.

Lisa’s hire demonstrates BLP’s continuing ability to attract high quality staff and is the latest in a number of partner hires including: M&A expert Karen Davies; EU & Competition specialist Andrew Hockley and Private Equity heavyweight Raymond McKeeve.

Commenting on the appointment Fraser Younson, head of the employment practice, said: “It is brilliant to be bringing in a lawyer of Lisa’s stature to the team. Our clients are large, multi-national companies who need the highest-quality legal advice to help them manage complex employment cases. Lisa’s background means that she is second to none in providing that level of advice, and her strong financial services experience is a perfect match with our existing strength in that sector. There are lots of synergies between us.”

Lisa said: “BLP’s employment team has broken through into the premier league in recent years and they are fast becoming a team of choice by the corporate elite. It has an excellent platform and match with my own practice and I am looking forward to applying my financial services experience to the benefit of BLP’s expanding client base.”
