BLP appoints Andrew Hockley as partner in EU & Competition Group

Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) announced today (5 February 2010) that Andrew Hockley will join the firm as a partner.  His appointment will strengthen the EU & Competition Group, which, since its formation in 2005, has grown to include 16 dedicated competition lawyers in London and Brussels.  The Group also includes a further five competition lawyers in the firm’s Moscow office, and has very strong relationships with leading independent law firms around the world through BLP’s panel of over 100 preferred firms.

Andrew, who has been EC Competition Counsel at BP Plc since 2007, is an expert in competition matters, particularly mergers and cartels. Prior to his role at BP, he was a member of the Antitrust Group at Allen & Overy where he worked in London and Brussels on a range of major cases including Sun Microsystems’ landmark complaint against Microsoft.

Andrew will be joining a team that includes a number of leading Competition experts.  David Harrison heads the Group and is supported by partners Adrian Magnus in London and Dave Anderson in Brussels.  The team has advised on many complex and high profile merger control, cartel and abuse of dominance cases, as well as advising on competition aspects of commercial agreements and compliance.  It also has substantial State aid and public procurement practices.  The Group has an international and domestic client list spanning a wide range of sectors, including regulated utilities, defence, financial services, aviation and technology.

This hire is the latest in a number recent of senior appointments at BLP, including leading commercial litigator Graham Shear, high-profile tax specialist Murray North, asset finance expert Russell Clifford and, most recently, James Duncan, who will set up a standalone Derivatives practice at BLP.

Commenting on the appointment, David Harrison, head of BLP’s EU and Competition Group said: “This appointment demonstrates BLP’s commitment to providing its clients with competition advice that is both practical and of the highest quality.  Andrew is one of the most outstanding competition lawyers with whom I’ve worked.  He is not only expert in the law.  He is solutions-focused and his in-house experience means that he also has an excellent understanding of commercial issues and of the needs of clients.  We are delighted that he is joining us.”

Andrew said: “I am excited to be returning to private practice as part of BLP. I feel that I have a great deal to offer, based on my international industry and private practice experience. The team is already renowned for its high quality work and collegiate nature and it has undergone impressive growth, gaining an excellent list of clients in the process. I am very much looking forward to joining the team and contributing to its continued development as it moves from strength to strength.”
