BLP advises SBOBET on West Ham United sponsorship

Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) recently advised online bookmaker SBOBET on its sponsorship agreement with West Ham United until the end of the 2009/10 season.  SBOBET is a trading name of Celton Manx Limited, licensed and regulated by the Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission.

The lucrative deal, the terms of which are undisclosed, means that the SBOBET logo is now worn by the first team and is featured on all adult replica strips.  There is also substantial branding around West Ham United’s stadium.

The BLP team was led by commercial partner Vanessa Barnett with intellectual property partner Ian De Freitas and betting and gaming senior associate Stephen Ketteley.

Commenting on the deal Vanessa said: “BLP’s betting and gaming team have an existing relationship with both West Ham United and SBOBET and they were delighted to be able to bring the two together on this partnership. Sponsorship deals of this nature tend to take months to come to fruition but we were able to make the introduction and finalise this in short order following the insolvency of West Ham’s previous sponsor.  I’m pleased to see SBOBET’s branding appear on Match of the Day already!”

Roger Thompson, in-house counsel, acted for West Ham United with Michael Jones from Hill Dickinson.  Commenting on the deal Roger said: “The transaction needed to be dealt with swiftly and confidentially. Fortunately both sides were greatly assisted by the sensible and practical stance taken by SBOBET and BLP, and West Ham United were lucky enough to be able to call on Michael Jones from Hill Dickinson who provided some last minute advice on a specialist part of deal. The relationship has started well and this has been in no small part to the important foundations laid by BLP’s team led by Vanessa Barnett.”
