BLP advise on 150 hectare development for the University of Cambridge

A cross-practice team from Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) has advised the University of Cambridge on its 150 hectare mixed-use scheme at the North West Cambridge Development, a project part of an estimated £1bn investment into the city.

The major expansion to the City of Cambridge will include 3,000 new homes, 2,000 student residences, 1m sq/ft of academic and commercial research space, a hotel, senior living facilities, a supermarket and supporting retail and community facilities.

BLP advised the University of Cambridge from the very inception of the development on all legal aspects including planning, procurement, construction (non-contentious and contentious), real estate, energy/projects, real estate disputes and charities law.

With numerous work-streams ongoing throughout the development process, BLP’s multi-disciplinary team worked to ensure the success of this exciting scheme that will open on Saturday 9 September 2017 as part of the University’s Open Cambridge festival. The BLP team was led by Lesley-Anne Avis, Commercial Real Estate Partner.

Lesley-Anne Avis, said: “It has been a real pleasure working on this very exciting project, which is one of the University’s largest ever building project, we are looking forward to the opening event on 9 September. It is always very special to see a scheme through from the start of the planning process to actually being occupied.”
