Philanthropy & Charitable Giving

loading, please wait...

Establishing their own philanthropic structure or dedicating a portion of their wealth to purely charitable purposes is an important element of the international wealth structuring of many high net worth families.

The appropriate philanthropic structure through which a wealth family co-ordinates their international charitable giving will depend on a number of factors, including the extent to which family members wish to have an on-going role in the family’s charitable giving and the jurisdictions in which the family wishes to carry out charitable activities. We have designed and established a number of different structures, including charities, charitable foundations and purpose trusts, in accordance with the needs and wishes of our clients.

Charities and other charitable structures also require on-going specialist advice which we are able to provide. We act for a wide range of charities, including educational institutions, medical and health care organisations, religious bodies and grant making trusts.  We also advise public bodies, corporates and individuals donating to or interacting with charities.

Our multi-disciplinary Charities Group provides practical and commercial advice on all legal issues affecting charities – including on governance, cross-border giving, charity incorporations and mergers, legislation affecting charities, the powers and duties of trustees and Charity Commission policies and operational guidance. We are also experienced in advising on administrative matters, such as fundraising ventures, licensing and service arrangements, employment issues and commercial transactions.

Our holistic approach to advising families on their philanthropy, and charities means that we draw upon a wealth of charity, real estate, intellectual property, commercial, finance, investment fund management, procurement, insolvency, tax, employment and pension legal expertise from across our firm. We have found that this “one-stop-shop” approach maximises the efficiency of our overall advice.
