GP commissioning: A new era for healthcare outsourcing

11 February 2011

The Government's plans to transfer the commissioning of healthcare services in England from Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) to GP consortia offer tremendous opportunity to outsourcing providers, both existing players and new market entrants.  With little government guidance on what consortia might look like, except to group together as federations to do some commissioning work, outsourcing in the healthcare sector is well and truly back on the agenda.  Organisations wishing to support consortia will benefit from their freedom to contract; and the menu of services to be procured is broad and could range from IT and informatics to estates and asset management.  Is this a brave new world in healthcare outsourcing or yet another false dawn?

Our keynote speaker, Dr Naresh Rati, Executive Partner, Vitality Partnership (one of the largest GP Partnerships in England), spoke from the unique experience of being a pioneer in GP Commissioning.  He shared with us practical, business-focused and highly informed views on:

  • the impact of the White Paper;
  • evolution/revolution of GP Commissioning Consortia and Pathfinders;
  • funding and accountability flows;
  • influence of key stakeholders - HealthWatch; Local authorities; NICE; CQC ,etc;
  • the future of shared services and the Xansa NHS Shared Business Services model; and
  • new market entrants - opportunities and risks.
