Our information law unit specialises in advising clients on all aspects of information law - in particular, we help clients with data protection, freedom of information and environmental information regulations law.

Data Protection

Complying with a complex and evolving area of law such as data protection has become a challenging management issue.

Any organisation using or storing customer records is subject to data protection legislation. Likewise, all organisations that employ people need to comply.  In particular, all businesses need to comply with the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998, which became effective in the UK on 1 March 2000. Our privacy specialists are experienced in advising clients in all aspects of data protection particularly those operating in a number of jurisdictions and those involved in e-commerce.

We help clients work with regulators and local laws around the world through our network of offices and preferred firms, with particular expertise advising clients in the context of multi-jurisdiction outsourcings.

Our services include data protection notifications and authorisations, privacy compliance audits and assessments, international compliance projects, privacy policies, notices and guidelines, data retention and destruction policies, data processing contracts, due diligence and all aspects of related training.

Freedom of Information

We help both our private and public sector clients to work with the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) and Environmental Information Regulations 2004 (EIR). We advise public authorities on how to comply with the legislation, but also how to respond to requests for information and to deal with the effect of the legislation at a practical level.

Public authorities often receive a number of complicated FOIA/EIR requests which require detailed and specific legal advice in order to be able to respond to them. We assist our clients in dealing with these.

We also advise clients in the private sector which are seeking information from the public sector, or who wish to encourage the public body not to disclose certain information.

We have experience of helping clients deal with complaints that have been escalated to the Information Commissioner’s Office and Information Tribunal.
