BLP Supporting the Community

We have been working closely with Manor Primary School in West Ham since early 2007 when we set up our popular volunteer reading scheme, with the assistance of Newham Education Business Partnership.  BLP volunteers go in to school at four different time slots each week, to help  pupils with their reading.  As well as improving pupils’ reading skills, the scheme helps to build up their confidence and boost their self esteem by introducing them to people outside their family and school groups, who give them one to one attention.  

 “The children have built up strong relationships with their reading volunteers, and really look forward to their visits.  It has had a marked impact on self esteem as they realise that the volunteer has come specifically for them.  Another benefit is the chance for the children to talk to adults that may have very different jobs and lifestyles to the ones that they experience.  It gives them an idea of how wide and high their aspirations could be." (Kate McGee, Head teacher of Manor Primary School)

Following on from the success of this scheme, we have established a second volunteering initiative with the school, with BLP volunteers going in to play maths games with the pupils to help them with numeracy skills. 

Our relationship with Manor Primary School has gone from strength to strength.  We have collaborated with the school in the making of a short film about the reading scheme and our staff speak at school assemblies from time to time.  We have also supplemented the school’s library by making a donation and arranged a collection of hundreds of books the staff  donated so that these could be given to children who are not fortunate enough to have their own. The relationship has been further strengthened by one of our members of staff becoming a Manor Primary School governor, building links for the future.
