Charity of the Year selection process

Each year we elect a charity to which we offer our support. Our charity of the year selection process is designed to be as fair and transparent as possible, closely involve the people who work at BLP and ensure that the selected charity means something to them. The process is overseen by the Charities Fundraising Committee  (the Committee) who also organise a programme of fundraising events and activities during the course of the charity year. BLP provides financial support to enable the events organised by the Committee to take place. In addition, BLP donates to the selected charity a sum equal to the amount it would have cost to purchase and send Christmas cards to BLP’s clients and contacts. The charity year runs from May to April , with the selection  process  beginning in late February. The process is entirely internal and we are not able to accept external applications from charities who will need to have a supporter working within BLP to nominate them.  Members of staff are invited to fill in a Charity of the Year Proposal Form and submit it to the Committee by a stated deadline. The Committee, following prescribed guidelines and criteria, draw up a shortlist and circulate this to BLP staff, inviting them to vote for the charity they would like to support. The charity with the most votes will be selected as the Charity of the Year.

Charity of the year 2011

This year we are supporting Ataxia-Telangiectasia (A-T) Society. A-T is a rare, neurodegenerative, genetic disease which affects many parts of the body via the cerebellum (the brain's motor control centre) causing severe disability in young children, robbing them of their independence and causing premature death. A wheelchair is usually needed by the age of ten. A-T is progressive and, in about 70% of cases, it also weakens the immune system leading to respiratory disorders.  Pneumonia is a common cause of death among A-T children. All children with A-T have a heightened risk of developing cancer, in particular leukaemia and lymphoma. The A-T Society was established in 1989 to help support and advise families affected by A-T particularly at the very difficult time around diagnosis. The objective of the society is to alleviate the distress and suffering that A-T causes by working to improve quality of life now and in the future. Its motto is “Supporting the Family - Fighting the Disease”. It is the only organisation in the UK which supports people affected by A-T and funds research into treating and ultimately eliminating the condition. To find out more about the charity click here.
